Chapter 9 The Gala
When Emma awoke, the world had taken on a new light. Though the nagging thread of her husband still hung like a snag in wait. She was no closer to Trevor than sheâd been before Liam left. In fact, she felt more distant than ever, but she had done something for someone else. She was filled with a new sense of purpose. She helped someone last night. She helped that woman.
So many thoughts swirled in her head. The day went by in slow motion, and Emma cleaned every surface of their modest house. Well, every surface but the lab. There was no way she was setting foot in there again.
She kept waiting for Trevor to come home early, to surprise her with a little funny business, but it never happened. Though Emma didnât want to believe it, things could really be over for the two of them. Emma had never failed at anything, but a marriage took two and it was hard to win when one of them didnât want to play.
Late afternoon, Emma slouched on the bed, clutching her phone. Amid her cleaning frenzy, sheâd received a notification. It had been weeks since she agreed to attend the gala, and now that she and Trevor were barely speaking, she didnât know how to find the energy. She let out a sigh, puffing her still too long bangs.
Emma hadnât heard him get home, but when Trevor tapped on the bedroom door, she flinched. He continued to push the door part way open.
âEmma?â he called. Emma looked up, clenching her jaw before giving him a tiny smile. Trevor paused in the doorway, biting his lip. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out. He took two steps and paused before finishing his trip across the room and settling on the bed next to Emma. Reaching down, he slipped his hand around hers and squeezed.
âIâm sorry Iâm such a jerk. Work is stressing me out, but thatâs no excuse to take it out on you. You know Iâm grateful to have such a strong, brilliant woman by my side.â Emma closed her eyes. She wanted to stay mad at him. It would make the lying easier. âI sometimes forget that Iâm lucky enough to always have the most gorgeous woman in the room by my side. I want you to know that.â
Emma bit her lip, turning to Trevor. His sad eyes could see how far away she was, and no matter how she felt, when he hurt, she hurt. That was what marriage was, and it embarrassed her that she just remembered that. She turned, lifting her hand to the side of his face. âItâs okay, Tre. Iâm fine. I just needed a breath. Iâll get ready and meet you downstairs.â
âAre you sure Emmy?â he looked up from under his eyebrows.
âYou know Iâll be there. Always.â She leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek. He turned his face and landed a kiss on her lips, before standing and leaving her to herself.
